THE LEGACY OF SSYC

110 Years and Counting: The Legacy of SSYC

Founded in 1912 by eleven power boaters, Southern Shore Yacht Club (SSYC) has evolved into one of the most respected yacht clubs on the Great Lakes. Located in the inner harbor of Jackson Park, SSYC has been a pillar of the South Side boating community for over a century.

Early Years (1912-1914)

Originally named the South Shore Power Boat Club (SSPBC), SSYC was created to support power boating at a time when local sailing clubs offered little space for motorized vessels. Fueling boats was a challenge, but members secured a fuel wagon service, attracting new boaters. By 1913, the club was officially chartered, and in 1914, it relocated to the inner harbor after overcoming logistical hurdles, including physically lowering a houseboat to fit under a bridge.

Growth & Transformation (1921-1930)

After fighting—and briefly winning—a legal battle against mooring fees in 1921, members ultimately accepted the costs in favor of better infrastructure. By 1930, the club had grown significantly and officially changed its name to Southern Shore Yacht Club.

Fire & Rebirth (1934-1935)

In 1934, a devastating fire destroyed the clubhouse, leaving the club at a crossroads during the Great Depression. With determination, members rebuilt a new Cape Cod-style clubhouse in 1935 using salvaged materials. Opening Day was celebrated with a grand dinner and a feature in the Chicago Tribune.

Adapting to Change (20th Century - Present)

SSYC thrived for decades, serving as a hub for the boating community. However, rising water levels and infrastructure challenges have tested the club’s resilience in recent years. Despite these obstacles, dedicated members continue to uphold its mission of fostering community, preserving tradition, and promoting boating excellence.

With over 110 years of history, SSYC remains a symbol of perseverance, adventure, and camaraderie on Lake Michigan.
